Got Superglue?

 By
Chris Newcomb, M.Div.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen!  Do not pass out at the party or people will superglue a penny to your back and it will end up in a substance abuse blog!  You have been warned!

Actually, I want to talk about the role of apologies in recovery.  But, I got your attention, right?!?  Now I just have to keep it.  Here we go!

Apologize for goodness sakes!  Stop holding onto your pride and ego.  If you messed up, admit it to yourself first and then to the person(s) you hurt through your actions.  It's ok, even the cool kids are doing it (not really but you want to be cool, right?)!

In all seriousness, apologies act like superglue to relationships.  When our mistakes tear our relationships apart, apologies have the power to 'superglue' the torn relationships back together again.  If only Humpty Dumpty had a spare bottle his life would've been drastically different!

The two take-home ideas are this:  First, it's never too late to apologize.  The only caveat to this is if your apology would stand to cause more harm than good.  So, please be discerning when you decided to apologize.

And, just so you know, if the person you hurt is dead, you can still write a letter in their honor confessing your wrong to them.  Obviously, they won't know about it but you will.  You would be amazed at how good it will feel to lay the issue to rest (pardon the pun).

Second, apologies keep you humble.  When you are humble, you are teachable.  When you are teachable, you can follow.  When you follow, you can stay sober!

That was easy!  Oh, and no, it is NOT okay to sniff the glue.  Bad idea!

At The Coleman Institute, we believe our safe, affordable detox combined with Naltrexone Therapy is the perfect 'superglue' to help you stick to and stay on the recovery road.  If you or someone you love is in need of detox from opiatesalcohol, benzos, Methadone, or Suboxone, please do not hesitant to call Jennifer Pius at 1-877-77-DETOX (33869).  We are here to help you and yours get clean and stay clean!
